The marks on the wall as a result of the flaking off of the paint resembles but inaccurately the sundial in ancient times, where time is not engraved into even graduations, but instead, the shadow it casts manifests and rotates on a plane (the dial).
This map of time expands its territory in the course of enduring external force as time elapses. While I tried to record this territory of time with a bundle of nails, I had to apply force on it, thus sometimes I changed the territories of this map unintentionally. The twists and turns of its unnatural territory bear memories of happenings (of force and tension) in this once private room from time past – laughing, shrieking, scolding, quaking…as far as I know of a small room crammed with an atom (family). The room has been evacuated (for demolition), but is it, or is that wall burdened with all the memories appeased? These "memories" scattered on the plane/wall, now, by converging on the deserted, broken power bar, travel through the three-dimensional space under the pulling force of transparent threads and thereby become unavoidable. They then fled from the room in pieces of broken blue mirror. The threads shimmered in the wandering light. The empathy with the body of the room occurred while I contemplated the swaying tree shadows cast through the pane-less window-frame onto that wall, chorusing with the summer breeze. This work starts from that calling for consolation, for a ritual of recalling, appeasing and letting go. My attempt to document the territory of personal time/memories of this room with a bundle of nails and a hammer, revived my own memories of the familial rooms I lived in. Nine days of nonstop knitting and unknotting, hammer after hammer, thread after thread, I went through a ritual of appeasing and letting go of unsettling memories I myself was burdened with. The body of my memories stayed with the body of the room, which was soon to melt into air in demolition. |
artist writing:
